Sugarloaf Golf Club

Sugarloaf Golf Club opened in 1985 in Maine's Carrabassett Valley, carved into the flank of the state's second-highest peak by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. Mountain resort leadership commissioned the course to draw visitors beyond ski season, and Jones responded with a dramatic layout threading through birch forest, granite ledge, and the Carrabassett River gorge. The stretch of holes plunging through that gorge, sometimes called the String of Pearls, gives the course its signature reputation for spectacular, vertigo-inducing mountain golf. Jones himself praised it as one of the most spectacular courses he had been associated with. Repeatedly ranked Maine's number one course by Golf Digest, Sugarloaf blends stunning panoramic scenery with a genuine championship test, standing as New England's premier mountain golf destination four decades after it debuted.
