Bretwood Golf Course

Est. 1968 · Geoffrey Cornish (original 18, 1968-69); Hugh Barrett (added nines 1989 and 1995)
Why we love this place

Bretwood is a family farm that became a 36-hole golf haven, and you feel that history on every river-bend hole. The North Course is the star, with a monster par-5 second, a shared double green and that rock-wrapped peninsula par 3. Big golf, honest prices and the Ashuelot River for company all day.

About Bretwood Golf Course

Bretwood Golf Course grew out of the Barrett family's farmland along the Ashuelot River on the edge of Keene. Geoffrey Cornish designed the original 18 holes: the first nine opened in 1968 and the second nine followed in July 1969. In 1989 the facility expanded to 27 holes with a new nine designed by Hugh Barrett, who had worked alongside Cornish, and Barrett blended those holes with Cornish's original back nine to create the North Course. A fourth nine, also by Barrett, was finished in 1995 and joined to Cornish's original front nine to form the South Course, making Bretwood a 36-hole public facility. Both courses followed the river in an old-fashioned out-and-back pattern, with neither ninth hole returning to the clubhouse. The North, generally regarded as the stronger of the two, measured close to 7,000 yards and featured a 612-yard second hole, a large double green shared by the third and eleventh, short but demanding par 5s, and a par-3 green set on a rock-ringed peninsula. Bretwood hosted the New Hampshire Amateur in 2017.
