Dunes Golf & Beach Club, The

The Dunes Golf & Beach Club opened in 1948 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, one of Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s early designs and the layout that helped launch both his reputation and the Grand Strand as a golf destination. Set along the Atlantic coast around Lake Singleton, the course threads through maritime forest and water. Its most famous hole is the par-5 13th, nicknamed "Waterloo," which bends more than ninety degrees around the lake so severely it seems to double back on itself; Sports Illustrated's Dan Jenkins named it among America's finest holes. The Dunes has hosted significant championships, including the 1962 U.S. Women's Open and the Senior Tour Championship in the 1990s, and since 1954 has welcomed the Golf Writers Association of America's annual gathering. Consistently ranked among America's greatest courses, it remains the recognized centerpiece of Myrtle Beach golf.
