Forest Dunes is a destination golf resort in Roscommon, in the heart of Michigan's Huron National Forest, anchored by a Tom Weiskopf design that opened in 2002. Weiskopf's layout is a study in contrast: roughly half its holes tunnel through dense stands of pine, while the others open onto exposed glacial sand, sprawling waste bunkers, and scruffy native undergrowth, giving the course two distinct personalities in a single round. Its reputation grew further with the 2016 addition of The Loop, a fully reversible course by architect Tom Doak that uses the same eighteen green complexes to play in two directions: the counterclockwise Red Course one day and the clockwise White Course the next, so players effectively get two courses from one piece of ground. Together with on-site lodging built for multi-day stays, the pairing of Weiskopf's forest-and-sand design and Doak's ingenious reversible routing has turned this quiet stretch of northern Michigan into a genuine bucket-list golf pilgrimage.
