Investors bought the land in 1966 and hired Willard Byrd to route the course. It ran as the semiprivate Irongate from 1969 to 1974, when J.P. Riddle took it private and renamed it Gates Four. It anchors a 1,000-acre gated community, and Kris Spence renovated it in 2011.
