About Oakley Country Club
Oakley Country Club is a private club in Watertown founded in 1898, when the Cambridge Golf & Country Club moved to Strawberry Hill and commissioned Willie Campbell to lay out 18 holes, said to be the first 18-hole layout in Massachusetts; it was renamed Oakley Country Club later that year. Donald Ross, recruited from Dornoch and arriving in 1899 as the club's teaching pro and greenkeeper, was assigned the redesign after Campbell's health declined. Ross completed his first Oakley redesign for play by fall 1900, making Oakley his first American club appointment and first completed design project.
