Pacific Grove Golf Links

Pacific Grove Golf Links owes its existence to Pebble Beach founder Samuel Morse, who sold the front-nine parcel to the city on the condition it stay a golf course. Two-time U.S. Amateur champion H. Chandler Egan, fresh from his celebrated 1929 redesign of Pebble Beach, laid out the original nine holes, which opened for play on May 9, 1932. Egan's front nine is a tight, tree-lined parkland stretch with small greens. In 1960, Jack Neville, co-designer of Pebble Beach itself, added a windswept links nine on dunes near the Point Pinos Lighthouse, letting the natural terrain dictate the routing in the spirit of the old Scottish and Irish courses. That contrast, and its municipal price, earned the course its enduring nickname, the 'Poor Man's Pebble Beach,' a genuine slice of Monterey coastal golf.
