Waverley Country Club

Founded in April 1896, Waverley Country Club is among the oldest golf clubs west of the Mississippi. After beginning on a small parcel in Southeast Portland, the club moved in 1898 to its enduring home on the Willamette River a few miles south of downtown, on land that had been a pioneer orchard, the very ground where the Bing cherry was cultivated. Herbert Barker produced an early design in 1909, but the course's character owes most to H. Chandler Egan, who between roughly 1912 and 1924 established the routing that survives today, shaped extensive bunkering, and built numerous green complexes; he continued guiding improvements until his death in 1936. A century later, architect Gil Hanse restored much of Egan's subtle, understated work, returning lost width and greenside detail to the historic layout.
