Princeville Makai Golf Course

Makai opened in 1971 as Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s first solo design, a milestone layout at Princeville on Kauai's North Shore, set where the dramatic Na Pali coastline begins. Though he had partnered with his legendary father on earlier work, Makai was the debut of his own firm, born from a love of Kauai that traced back to his 1961 honeymoon. The course became a tournament stage, hosting the LPGA Tour for five straight seasons with winners including Hall of Famers Betsy King, Juli Inkster and Beth Daniel, and later the World Cup of Golf, where a United States team led by John Mahaffey and Andy North won handily. A complete Jones Jr. renovation in 2009 and 2010 introduced Seashore Paspalum turf throughout, refreshing the ocean-, lake- and mountain-view nines for modern play.
