Red Tail Golf Club

Red Tail Golf Club occupies the grounds of the former Fort Devens, a sprawling U.S. Army post that dated to 1917 and was decommissioned in the mid-1990s. Architect Brian Silva opened the course in 2002, routing it lightly across sandy, rolling terrain where soldiers' barracks once stood along what are now several middle holes. Silva wove the site's military past directly into the design, keeping a lookout tower near the closing tee and old ammunition bunkers in play around the sand-splashed 17th. The layout earned New England's first Audubon International Signature Sanctuary designation, reflecting an environmentally sensitive build. Wide fairways, deep bunkering and bold green complexes give it a heathland character unusual for the region. Red Tail has hosted significant amateur competition, including the 2009 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links, and is regularly ranked among Massachusetts' finest public courses.
