The Quarry Golf Club

The Quarry Golf Club occupies a genuinely storied site just north of downtown San Antonio: the former Alamo Cement operation, a limestone quarry dating to the turn of the 20th century whose stone helped build Texas landmarks before the mine closed in 1983. Within a decade architect Keith Foster transformed the ground into a daily-fee course of two distinct halves, opening in 1993. The front nine plays links-style across open, rolling, largely treeless terrain, while the back nine drops into the old quarry pit itself, framed on multiple sides by rock walls rising as high as 100 feet. Dramatic elevation changes and forced carries define the closing stretch, with holes such as the uphill 10th and the quarry-wall carry at the 17th standing out. It remains one of the metro area's most popular and distinctive public courses.
