About Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course

Van Cortlandt opened on July 6, 1895 as the first public municipal golf course in the United States, a nine-hole layout first called "the Meadows," pushed for by local golfers who couldn't find private land for a course. The city hired Scottish-born Tom Bendelow around 1899 to manage it and expand it from 9 holes to 18, making it the country's first public 18. Parts of Bendelow's layout were later lost to the Major Deegan Expressway and Mosholu Parkway in the 1940s–50s, but the Bronx course is still city-owned and open to everyone.
