Whirlwind Golf Course

Whirlwind Golf Club opened in 2000 on the Gila River Indian Community's Wild Horse Pass property near Chandler, offering 36 holes of championship desert golf designed by architect Gary Panks. The facility is split between two par-72 courses, Cattail and Devil's Claw, both routed to reflect the heritage of the Pima (Akimel O'odham) and Maricopa (Pee-Posh) peoples, with hole names drawn from local legends and landmarks. Devil's Claw plays to roughly 7,029 yards and Cattail stretches to about 7,334, giving the property real tournament length. From 2001 to 2005 Whirlwind hosted the Gila River Golf Classic on golf's developmental tour, with Devil's Claw staging the first two editions before the event moved to Cattail for its final three years. The courses remain a well-regarded public draw south of the Phoenix metro.
