Cape Cod Country Club opened in 1928 as a 9-hole course named Coonamessett, part of the Coonamessett Ranch resort development and designed by Devereux Emmet and Alfred H. Tull. The facility went through several names (briefly the Treadway Inn in the 1950s, then Clausen's in the 1960s) before becoming Cape Cod Country Club in 1977, and hosted three consecutive Massachusetts State Opens in the mid-1950s. The club itself states it has found no evidence that a long-rumored Donald Ross redesign ever occurred.
