Kingsmill Resort - River Course

The River Course at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia, opened in 1975 as an early Pete Dye design, and it reflects that formative period of his career, closer in spirit to Harbour Town than to his later, more theatrical work. Set along the James River, the layout is tight and shot-demanding, with Dye's trademark use of angles, framing, and precise targets rather than sheer length. Dye returned roughly three decades after the opening to refine and update the course. The River Course became a longtime professional stage, hosting the PGA Tour's Michelob Championship from 1981 through 2002 before transitioning to the LPGA, where it has anchored a regular tour event; the resort has continued to host top women's professional golf for years. Its riverside finish and strategic character keep it among Virginia's best-known resort tests.
