Mayacama Golf Club opened in 2001 on 675 acres of rolling Sonoma County hillsides above Santa Rosa, in the heart of Northern California wine country. Jack Nicklaus designed the par-72 layout to embrace the natural land, threading fairways between oak-studded ridges and valleys carrying streams and wetlands. It is deliberately a return to traditional golf: the course is walking-only, with no carts, no yardage signs and no on-course markers to break the rhythm of the round. Century-old live oaks and fully sodded, sand-capped fairways gave the course a mature look from its earliest days and help it hold firm, playable turf year-round. Founded by a group of golf enthusiasts as a private members' club, Mayacama pairs the Nicklaus course with a luxury wine-country retreat, and Forbes has recognized it among the best private golf communities in America.
