Poppy Hills is the Monterey Peninsula gem that belongs to the golfers, not the resorts, and we love it for that. Walking those towering pines on ground once part of the AT&T rotation feels like sneaking into the club's inner circle. It's the bucket-list Pebble Beach detour every everyday player should point their compass toward.

About Poppy Hills Golf Course
Poppy Hills sits on land in Del Monte Forest that Pebble Beach founder Samuel F.B. Morse had long earmarked for golf. The Northern California Golf Association purchased the wooded site in 1977 and opened the Robert Trent Jones Jr. design on June 1, 1986, making it the first course in the United States owned and operated by a golf association. For nearly two decades it served as one of three rotating venues for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, hosting the event from 1991 through 2009. In 2014, Jones returned for a roughly $10 million renovation that dropped fairways back to the natural forest floor, sand-capped the property, rebuilt the greens and bunkers, and installed a modern irrigation system, transforming the playing surfaces into firm, fast conditions. It remains the NCGA's home course and a public-access counterpart to its famous neighbors.
