Rochester Country Club

William F. Mitchell and Orrin E. Smith; back nine by Phil Wogan (1964)
Why we love this place

Rochester Country Club pairs a classic front nine with a Wogan back nine, all rolling beside the Cocheco River. Recent state amateur championships prove it can test the best, yet daily-fee golfers walk the same fairways. That combination is hard to beat.

About Rochester Country Club

Rochester Country Club sits on a 150-acre property along the banks of the Cocheco River in the Gonic section of Rochester. Its original nine is credited to William F. Mitchell and Orrin E. Smith, and a back nine designed by Phil Wogan followed in 1964, creating the 18-hole, par-72 championship course that plays today. The club is not the city's first: an earlier Rochester Country Club opened in 1904 on open land near Walnut and Snow Streets, but no trace of it remains. Although the Gonic club keeps member traditions, it describes itself as a public course, offering daily play alongside memberships. It has become a regular tournament venue, hosting the Seacoast Amateur in 2020 and 2024, the NEPGA Avidia Cup Finals in 2020, the New Hampshire Women's Amateur in 2024 and the New Hampshire State Amateur in 2025.
