Rustic Canyon Golf Course

Rustic Canyon Golf Course opened in April 2002 in Moorpark, on county-leased land where a broad, ecologically sensitive wash ran through sandy, native-scrub terrain. Strict environmental limits meant almost no earthmoving was permitted, so architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, working with writer-designer Geoff Shackelford, routed a minimalist layout that follows the ground as they found it. The result is a firm, wide, ground-game course prized for strategic angles, subtle contours, and affordability rather than manufactured spectacle. Golf Digest named it the Best New Affordable Public Course in America for 2002, and it later appeared on national rankings of top modern and public-access courses. Among architecture enthusiasts it is frequently cited as proof that a low-budget municipal-style course can deliver genuine design substance.
