About San Diego Country Club
San Diego Country Club was founded in 1897 with nine holes in Balboa Park. Evicted in 1914 to make way for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, the club merged with Point Loma Golf Club and in 1920 bought more than 150 acres in Chula Vista, where its William Watson-designed course opened on September 3, 1921; Billy Bell Jr. later remodeled it. The PGA Tour event now known as the Farmers Insurance Open began here in 1952 as the San Diego Open. That first edition is where heavyweight champion Joe Louis, playing as an invited amateur, became the first Black golfer to compete in a PGA-sanctioned tournament. The club also hosted the 1964 U.S. Women's Open and the 2025 U.S. Senior Women's Open.
