About Tanglewood Championship Course

The Championship Course at county-owned Tanglewood Park in Clemmons opened in 1958 to a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design. It hosted the 1974 PGA Championship -- won by Lee Trevino, one stroke ahead of Jack Nicklaus -- the 1986 U.S. Amateur Public Links, and fifteen editions of the Vantage Championship on the Senior/Champions Tour through 2002. It was extensively renovated in 2018 by Robert Trent Jones II and Richard Mandell, who rebuilt the bunkers and converted the greens to Champion Bermudagrass. It remains a public, county-run facility.
