Amesbury Golf & Country Club

Amesbury Golf & Country Club began in 1922, when Bill Gowen and a group of local businessmen bought the 110-acre Smith Farm on Monroe Street. Wayne Stiles laid out the nine holes and the course was ready for play by 1924 — opening, for a single year, under the name Powder House Hill Country Club. Member-owned until 1960, it was later bought and opened to the public by the Mellon family, who own and operate the club to this day.
