Montauk Downs

Montauk Downs sits at the eastern tip of Long Island in Montauk, NY, its rolling, links-like terrain shaped by ocean wind. Golf on the site dates to 1927, when developer Carl Fisher created an early course as part of his ambitious plan to make Montauk a resort destination. The modern layout was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., who reworked the course in 1968 with help from his son Rees. New York State acquired the property in 1980, and it now operates as Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course, an affordable public facility routinely praised as one of the best state-park and public courses in the country. Rees Jones returned in the early 2000s to refine several holes. Its firm, undulating greens and exposed setting make it a genuine championship-length test.
