Why we love this place

Newport Golf Club is a true town course, built in 1921 because locals wanted golf of their own, with the Sugar River winding through to keep every round honest. A state amateur host with a century of community stories, it's exactly the kind of club we love to champion.

About Newport Golf Club

Newport Golf Club began when local golfers grew tired of the ten-mile trip to Claremont and set out to build a course in their own town. The club opened in 1921 as a nine-hole course, with Willie Park Jr. credited with the design, much of it on land owned by Dr. Cain, one of the founders. After longtime superintendent John Cain died in 1965, the club was renamed the John H. Cain Golf Club in his honor. In 1988 members voted to buy adjacent land, and an 18-hole course designed by Phil Wogan opened in May 1991. The Sugar River splits the property, and flooding once forced a complete redesign of the par-5 18th. The course hosted the New Hampshire Amateur in 1996. Member-owned for roughly 80 years, it passed through bank ownership before new owners restored the Newport Golf Club name in 2003.
