Pinehurst No. 4

Pinehurst No. 4, in Pinehurst, North Carolina, traces its origins to Donald Ross, who developed the layout in the resort's early decades, with 1919 often cited for his design. Over the years the course was reworked repeatedly, including versions by Robert Trent Jones, Rees Jones and a heavily manufactured 1999 Tom Fazio redesign. In 2018 Gil Hanse and partner Jim Wagner completed a ground-up renovation, stripping away the Fazio era to reconnect No. 4 with the sandy, natural character of neighboring No. 2. Their version features wide fairways, sprawling exposed sand, native wire grass and rolling ridgelines that create dramatic vistas and abundant strategic options. Firm and playable for all levels yet demanding for strong fields, the reimagined No. 4 is frequently called one of the most enjoyable and handsome courses at Pinehurst.
