Golf came to the Linville valley in the 1890s, but the course players know today dates to 1924, when the MacRae family commissioned Donald Ross to build a championship layout near Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina's Blue Ridge. Ross reportedly needed only a short scouting visit to commit to the site, and his crews shaped the holes by hand with mule-and-pan grading that followed the land's natural contours. Grandmother Creek is the routing's defining hazard, threading through much of the course and forcing carries on holes such as the demanding par-4 third. Small, subtly canted greens and restrained bunkering reward precision over power. Widely regarded as one of Ross's finest mountain designs, the course has been carefully maintained and modernized in recent decades with consulting help from Bobby Weed Golf Design.
