River Oaks Country Club

River Oaks Country Club was chartered in 1923 as the centerpiece of Houston's namesake neighborhood, and its golf course was laid out by the legendary Donald Ross. Ross's original par-71 design measured a modest 6,375 yards but was quickly regarded among the country's best, and in 1926 the Texas Golf Association brought its amateur championship here, launching a long tournament tradition. The club hosted early Houston Opens in the late 1930s and 1946, plus the PGA Tour's Western Open in 1940. Joe Finger reworked the course in the late 1960s, adding penal-style teeth, and in 2014 Tom Fazio led a comprehensive renovation that built three new holes and stretched the layout to roughly 7,050 yards. Tucked into one of Houston's most storied enclaves, it remains a private club rich in history.
