The Country Club of Virginia - James River

The Country Club of Virginia dates to 1908, but its celebrated James River Course opened on June 30, 1928, assembled by golden-age architect William Flynn from two nines drawn together into a single championship layout. Flynn, of the famed Philadelphia School, brought the same eye that shaped Shinnecock Hills and Merion to this Richmond parkland. The course has been carefully stewarded over the decades, with a Rees Jones renovation in 1992 and a restoration by Virginia architect Lester George in 2003 that reworked the fourth into a dramatic par three. Its championship pedigree is deep: it hosted the U.S. Amateur in 1955 and 1975, and since 2016 has staged the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, a senior tour playoff event. It remains one of Virginia's most respected private courses.
