Donald Ross laid out Course No. 2 in 1907 and kept reworking it for decades, living beside the third hole until his death in 1948 and converting the sandy greens to grass in the mid-1930s. The design is celebrated for its crowned, domed putting surfaces that repel imprecise approaches, rewarding ground-game creativity over aerial power. In 2011 architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw led a landmark restoration guided by vintage photographs, widening fairways, removing rough, and reintroducing native sandy waste areas dotted with wiregrass while sharply cutting water use. The course has hosted more championships than nearly any American venue, including the U.S. Open in 1999, 2005, 2014 and 2024, plus a historic back-to-back staging of the men's and women's U.S. Opens in 2014. Payne Stewart's winning putt in 1999 remains one of the tournament's iconic moments.
