Savannah Golf Club

The Savannah Golf Club traces its heritage to 1794 and bills itself as one of the oldest golf clubs in America, a claim rooted in eighteenth-century records though disputed by several Northeastern clubs and complicated by a long gap in continuous play. The present club and course, just blocks from downtown Savannah, was established in 1899, apparently without knowledge of that older lineage at the time. An original nine by S.W. Stewart gave way in the 1920s to a redesign by the renowned architect Donald Ross, whose routing still defines most of today's layout; later modifications by Clyde Johnson rerouted holes after the city condemned adjacent land. The course famously winds among Revolutionary War-era earthworks, and its classic Ross green complexes, contoured putting surfaces, and strategic bunkering give this compact, history-soaked layout its enduring character.
