Southern Pines Golf Club sits in the heart of North Carolina's Sandhills, where the golf course first opened in 1906 and was routed by Donald Ross in the years that followed. For generations it was a beloved but underappreciated Ross layout, its strategy slowly hidden as trees encroached on the playing lines. That changed in 2021, when architect Kyle Franz completed an eighteen-month restoration: widening fairways, clearing trees to reveal the natural sandy terrain, rebuilding greens and bunkers, and reintroducing a lost short par three with a sand green echoing Ross's originals. The reborn par-70 reopened in September 2021 to wide acclaim, earning recognition as one of the best restoration projects of its year. It is now operated alongside the neighboring Pine Needles resort family.
