Makena South Course

The Makena resort opened in 1981 with a single Robert Trent Jones Jr. eighteen carved into the volcanic slopes of Haleakala on Maui's quiet southern coast. Rising demand prompted a 1993 expansion: nine new holes were added to each existing nine, splitting the original design into separate North and South courses. The resulting South Course stretched past 7,000 yards to a par of 72, threading open, rolling fairways toward dramatic oceanfront moments such as the reachable par-five 10th and the downhill par-three 15th. Long prized for its isolation and raw coastal scenery, the property changed hands several times before Discovery Land Company acquired it in 2014 and turned Makena into a private, members-only community. The South Course is no longer in regular public play.
