The Challenge at Manele

The Challenge at Manele opened in 1993 as a Jack Nicklaus design set on the southern cliffs of Lanai, high above Hulopoe Bay. Nicklaus routed the par-72 course across old lava fields, with three holes running along 150-foot cliffs that use the Pacific itself as a hazard. The signature par-3 12th plays roughly 200 yards from a cliffside tee to a peninsula green perched above churning surf, and is often called the most photographed hole in the islands. The par-4 17th, a dogleg carrying rocky cliffs to a green jutting toward the sea, is another standout. In 1994 Microsoft founder Bill Gates famously exchanged wedding vows on the 12th. Now part of the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, it remains one of Hawaii's most dramatic layouts.
