Riverside Golf Course

Est. 1932 · Wayne Stiles (North Course)
Why we love this place

We love Riverside because it is the people's championship course. Forty-two Maine Opens, WPA-era roots and an affordable city-run setting along the Presumpscot make it a cornerstone of Portland golf. Twenty-seven holes, a junior practice loop and a welcome for everyone.

About Riverside Golf Course

Riverside Golf Course is Portland's municipal golf facility, owned and operated by the city along the Presumpscot River. It opened as a nine-hole course in July 1932, when City Manager James E. Barlow officially dedicated it and a round of nine cost fifty cents. Directories credit the North Course design to Golden Age architect Wayne Stiles. Federal Works Progress Administration funding expanded the course to eighteen holes in 1937, a nine-hole South Course followed in 1969, and a three-hole practice course for junior programs was added in 2007. Riverside is woven into Maine's championship history like no other venue: between 1938 and 2010 it hosted the Maine Open forty-two times, more than any other course in the state, and it also hosted the Maine Amateur in 1947, 1948, and 1973, along with several Maine Women's Amateurs. In winter the grounds stay busy with skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing, keeping the city course in use year-round.
